Description
The Center for Building Crafts (CBC) is a 220 sqm construction built with rammed earth, stone, palm reed roofing among other earthen material. Set in Zeitouna, St Katherine in the desert of South Sinai, the challenge was to devise along with local inhabitants strategies to adapt Bedouin modes of living through architecture. Appropriate building techniques were pursued, whereby the notion of sustainability held much more than just green building; one that incorporates economic, social and cultural factors within the building cycle. Among the outcomes of the project was the building guideline Appropriate Building Patterns for Saint Catherine, Egypt published in 2010.
