Description
Boldan, is a young initiative that aims to explore and document earthen architectural heritage through building with people, local materials and traditional techniques. Boldan conducts hands-on workshops, talks, and exhibitions about earthen materials and vernacular heritage. Boldan is also an Arabic word for locales. Hence, Boldan aspires to invest in local, social and sustainable building knowledge.
Over the years, Boldan has gathered a community of fellow enthusiasts, in Egypt and abroad, from across disciplines to learn about building as a social process through using our hands to build with others. The following are structures and workshops in which Boldan has participated building with earth and recycled materials. A plastic vault and a gabion installation in Cairo, 4 wooden stations in a beach site in Tirana, an earthen dome in Fayium and a traditional oven in Aswan, a room in Siwa, and an earth plaster workshop in Odessa, between 2014 and 2017.
